Niedermayer lifts Ducks over Avalanche

Hockey Betting Lines

02/26/2007 - Anaheim, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Scott Niedermayer's goal with 3:23 left in the third period proved to be the game-winner, as the Ducks earned a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.

Niedermayer also had two assists, and Andy McDonald contributed two goals and a helper for Anaheim, which snapped a three-game skid. Teemu Selanne and Chris Pronger also scored for the Ducks, while Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 23 saves.

Joe Sakic scored for Colorado to extend his point streak to 12 games, but the Avalanche lost for the fifth time in six games. Mark Rycroft and Milan Hejduk also scored for the Avalanche, while Jose Theodore stopped 36 shots.

Colorado's Karlis Skrastins didn't play due to a knee injury, snapping his 495 consecutive game streak, the longest streak by a defenseman in NHL history.

Hejduk evened the score with 5:07 remaining in regulation. Andrew Brunette centered the puck from the right boards, but the disc bounced off two Anaheim sticks in front. Hejduk gobbled up the loose puck and deposited it past Giguere.

However, Niedermayer gave the Ducks the lead a short time later, scoring on a wrist shot from the slot that got through a screened Theodore.

Hejduk was then whistled for high-sticking a double-minor, and the Ducks capitalized as Pronger lit the lamp with 2:35 left on a one-timer from above the right circle.

McDonald scored twice in a span of less than five minutes in the opening period. His first came on a rebound in front at 9:30, and McDonald netted his 18th of the season, near the start of a power play at the 14:21 mark. Selanne's shot from the left circle clanked off the near post, but McDonald banged in the rebound, just seven seconds after Ken Klee went to the penalty box for a delay of game.

Rycroft brought the Avalanche within a goal with 1:45 remaining in the first. Ian Laperriere passed the puck from the left circle to Rycroft, who tipped the disc from in front between Giguere's pads.

Sakic tied the contest on a shot from the bottom of the right circle after a cross-ice pass from Hejduk five minutes into the third, as Colorado was on the power play due to an interference call on Samuel Pahlsson.

The goal was Sakic's 601st in his career in his 1,300th NHL game. The goal tied him with Jarri Kurri for 16th place all-time.

Selanne then gave the Ducks the lead with 43.7 seconds left in the second. McDonald passed the puck from the left circle to a streaking Selanne, who tipped it past Theodore from the right side of the net.

Game Notes

The Ducks are 1-3 versus the Avalanche this season...Colorado's Paul Stastny had an assist and is riding a 12-game point streak...Brunette has a 10-game point streak...Giguere is 16-1-4 in his home starts this season.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
